WithInSight Gallery Artist Profile

Jeffrey Silva

Jeffrey Silva

The American West has been an endless source of rich inspiration for countless artists. The diversity of colors, textures, and landscapes it offers serve as a playground for the curious eye. Over this past year, I have been fortunate enough to travel out West. I've witnessed firsthand the orange hues of alpenglow at 10,000 feet of elevation lighting Hallett Peak in Colorado, the colored mounds of South Dakota’s Badlands after a vicious thunderstorm, and the roar of the Pacific against San Diego’s sandstone cliffs delicately dotted with the endangered Torrey Pine.

In assessing a landscape, the search for strong composition steals my attention, but color and lighting are the factors that determine whether the scene is worth capturing and taking back home. However, the landscape photographer must first will mind over body. When you’ve been hiking uphill at 4:00 A.M. in the dark, with a backpack full of gear nauseating your lungs to fight for any sliver of oxygen in the thin mountain air, you beg and promise your body that it will all be worth it. Only faith propels us forward as we aim to capture that holy grail of photography— “the shot.”

Each photograph presented here vividly records my love affair with the West and my attempt at drawing you, the viewer, closer to those wild emotions I felt before such beauty. I am forever grateful to Richard Stromberg’s Chicago Photography Classes for providing the resources, community, and teachers that have challenged and inspired me to new heights with my photographic art.
