WithInSight Gallery Artist Profile

Federica Ghidelli

My show photographs are part of a larger collection called “Colors Behind Bars.” I started this project unconsciously in 2015 with frequent trips to the Lincoln Park Zoo. After I had taken hundreds of pictures, I realized the story I was creating in my mind. I was alternating shots of animals behind bars with shots of flowers growing freely outside the gates of the zoo. Our show class critiques were decisive in the realization of this story that, now I know, has been with me the whole time: animals trapped behind bars and flowers with the same shade of color, living a life for them.

Through an almost complete desaturation of colors, the subjects become the core of the picture. Their essence and beauty are perceived through one color only. The intentional darkness and the peculiar light help deliver a muted scream for freedom. All the photographs are archivally printed on Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl paper.

My photographic journey began after moving to Chicago from Monza, a small town in Italy. With a background in Fashion and Digital Design, I challenged myself with this new unknown medium called camera. I started Photo I in the Fall of 2014, continuing with Photo II and III. Throughout this process, I've never stopped taking pictures. I’ve been a Photoshop and Lightroom instructor here at RSCPC since 2016. In June 2017 I received the Gold Award from the international competition “Prix de la Photographie.” This gave me new energy and fuel to keep working.

All the classes I took as a student, all the people and instructors I met during these years and my students made me the person and the artist I am today. A huge thank you to all of you.
