After three years of writing fitness memoirs, I'm switching directions. For the first time since a Creative Writing class in college, I'm dipping my toes into the world of fiction.
I've been kicking around various SciFi ideas since last summer, starting and stopping various drafts. I joined up with the SelfPublishing Schools “Fundamentals of Fiction” group last October to get my butt in gear.
On Thurs., Jan. 18, I stopped procrastinating and sat my butt in my chair every spare chance I had. Thirteen days later, I crossed the 60,000-word mark for the first draft. It was fitting that the Super Blue Blood moon appeared on the horizon above Chicago as I was finishing.
Inspired by Chris Fox, my goal is to write at least 3,000 words per day. Some days are 5,000, others are even higher at 7,500. I break things up into 30-minute sprints, writing as fast as my mind (and fingers) can go. I picked up a refurbed ThinkPad and loaded up Dragon Naturally Speaking but I haven't gotten around to using it yet.
I took a break Wednesday night to try a few other stories, possibly related to my main story. Those will follow shortly so let me know what you think.
